Tigana

"Tigana: 10th Anniversary Edition" by Guy Gavriel Kay

A year ago, I was reading Brad DeLong's blog and he mentioned this book called Tigana. I was curious what kind of book Brad would enjoy so I decided to buy a book by Guy Gavrial Kay. Instead of Tigana, I bought Sailing to Sarantium - and absolutely loved it.

It has been a long time since I read a book for fun so while on vacation this month, I read Tigana. This book is not as good as StS but it was still a fun read.

The things one finds in a Kay's book: A political plot. Lots of characters. A little sex, a little violence, a little magic. Likable heroes.

The most unique thing I find in Kay's books (which is absent in almost all "fantasy" novels) is death. Specifically, death of heroes. Kay always include good guys that dont make it as well as nuanced characters who are good and evil. It is this element that I like most about Kay and that gives his stories their sense of realism. Tigana is a true fantasy world but as I read StS, I kept thinking to myself, "This could have happened."

In other words, Kay writes fantasy books for adults. I cant wait to read more of them.
