Why wife finds it completely baffling but the one TV show that I genuinely look forward to every week is re-runs of Doctor Who.
I love science fiction and discovered Doctor Who when I was in middle school during the 1980's. I used to play video games on my Apple IIe and watch Tom Baker and the Dalek's on Saturday night. Good memories.
Recently one of our local PBS stations started to show re-runs of Doctor Who starting from the very beginnging - episodes that are totally new to me but still have a strong nostalgia factor.
They started with the original black & white episodes from the 1960s, which sadly, dont hold up very well today. They seemed to have skipped over much of the second Doctor, who was a cross between Adolf Hitler and Mo from the Three Stooges and are now on the third Doctor, John Pertwee.
I cant really explain it but Im loving the show with all its retro, cheezy effects and storyline. It's a simpler time with no blood or realistic violence. It is like a G-rated TV show and just plain fun.
At the same time, Sci Fi channel is showing episodes of new Doctor Who episodes from England. These shows are quite a contrast. Modern special effects and more gruesome storylines.
To be honest, I dont like the female lead (Ms Piper and her bad dye-job) and I didnt like the new Doctor very much but things have changed. After just one season of the resurrected show, they replaced the Doctor with a new guy and Im rather liking it all of a sudden. I dislike that they made everyone much younger, presumably to appeal to a younger and hipper audience, but the second season has better chemistry and better acting. They even brought back Sarah Jane Smith from the Pertwee-era which was kind of fun.
If you have never watched Doctor Who before, check it out. The Doctor is an acquired taste but a lot of fun.
