Holy cow I played some great games in 2010! Before we get too far into 2011, I wanted to sum up a great year of gaming.
On the PC, I played Dragon Age: Origins, Starcraft 2, Star Trek Online, Dawn of War 2: Chaos Rising, and Civilization 5.
On the PS3 I played Uncharted 2, Red Dead Redemption, and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit.
On the Xbox I played Mass Effect 2, Halo 3, Halo: Reach, and Assassin's Creed 2.What a list!
My pick for best game in 2010 was Red Dead Redemption followed closely by Halo: Reach, Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age.
Here is a quick run down of 2010 in no particular order.
Dragon Age: Origins The PC is the place for real RPG action and DA:O did not disappoint. I spent a LOT of time playing this game and loved it. Strong story, detailed combat. Never lost interest.
Starcraft 2 Possibly the only Blizzard game I have ever liked but did I really pay $60 for a download? I enjoyed the RTS single-player but didnt get into the multiplayer after a brief trial. This is a good game with high production values and I will probably play the sequel but I was left wondering why it gets so much attention and Relic gets so little. Its good but it ain't that good.
Star Trek Online How 'bout a little love for the Trek!? Much maligned but I had fun flying my space ship around. Sadly I had no friends to play with and did not meet anyone in-game so I left it. The FPS portion is lame but the ships are cool. However no MMO is much fun without other people. Maybe someday I will try again.
Dawn of War 2: Chaos Rising I love me some Relic! No base building; no unit queues. Just units, cover and fighting with some RPG loot. DoW2 was a great game; this addition is only a good one. Actually lost interest and have not finished it yet.
Civilization 5 Wow, I've been playing Civ since the original and this is my least favorite one. I hear there is a patch but I lost interest in this game a while back. It looks great but it does not play well. Maybe it can be improved enough to scratch my Civ itch in the future.
Uncharted 2 Best PS3 game I had ever played. I am not a Tomb Raider climbing-puzzler fan but this game was fun. Story is pretty good, characters were interesting and the combat was fun.
Red Dead Redemption The story and the graphics made this my game of the year. In a world of similar games, there is nothing else quite like it. I am not looking for a sequel but I loved this game. A must play. (Admittedly its kind of a downer; took me a long time to finish with some long breaks in there.)
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Got this for Xmas after hearing so much great stuff about it. Wins my award for dumbest game story ever -- police department buys ferrari's to crash into speeders. Its fun and looks great.
Mass Effect 2 I liked Mass Effect. I finished ME. ME2 is better in every way. Great game that I breezed through night after night on the Xbox until I finished. Might even give it a replay which is unheard of for me. A bit curious how it looks and plays on other platforms though now that it is no longer an Xbox exclusive.
Halo 3 What's happening? Who are these dudes? Can you repeat that again? Totally baffled by the story, but this is more Halo: Grab a laser and kill everyone that takes damage; move forward to a save area; repeat. After the ability to interact with the environment in games like ME2, the emptiness of Halo was kind of jarring.
Halo: Reach Woah, did I sound luke warm on Halo? This game rocked! Easily my favorite Halo in every way. I prefer the squad setting much better to the Master Chief lone-gun story of the other three. The military story was also easy to follow and comprehend. Had a blast with this one and almost immediately wanted to play it again on insanity. What an ending... Only thing I would change is that whole "guys falling from space and walking away" thing... That was ridiculous in Halo3 and insulting to repeat it in this game.
Assassin's Creed 2 Got this for Xmas and couldn't put it down... until I did. Interesting game. Take the sneaking from Thief, the climbing from Crackdown, add some puzzles from tomb raider, add a little RPG city-building and some hand to hand combat with Italy in the 1400s. Good stuff! I think I am about half way through the Truth and have rebuilt my town and now its starting to wear on me a bit. Im tired of murdering all these innocent people and the gameplay is a getting repetitive. |
